December 18, 2008

File server roles installation:

File services provides technologies that help manage storage, enable fiber replication, manage shared folders, ensure fast searching and enable access for UNIX client computers. With file services, organization can store files in a central location and then share them with users across the company network. File services also enables you to provision storage on fibre channel and iSCSI disk storage subsystems.

Installation Steps

Go to server manager tool and select Roles.

On the right hand side of the window you could see Add Roles, click on that.

we will start of the wizard here Click NEXT.

Select file services as shown below, just put a check mark against it and click on NEXT

This window will give you brief introducation on file services.
Click NEXT

In this screen it will ask you for what are the roles services you are going to install for file services. select which ever roles required for your environment and click NEXT.

Note: what ever roles you select the description for that will be given in brief on the right hand window.

You could actually go ahead and start building namespace inside this wizard but in our case we would be creating a namespace later using DFS management snap-in in server server manager.

Select 2nd option and click on NEXT.

There is being some enhancement to storage monitoring but the question here is do you want to enable monitoring or not. Here you can monitor the amount of space used on each volume on the computer and generate storage report when volume reaches a specified usage threshold.

Here I’m going to monitor disk volume. Select NTFS volume and click NEXT

Here you have an option to SELECT receive reports by EMAIL and you could mention the email ID to which the report need to be sent.

I will leave it to the default i.e to save the report to the given location.

Click NEXT for installation.

Installation in progress

Once installation is completed you will get below window saying installation succeeded.

Click CLOSE

In the server manager if you see the file services as failed go to services and start related services for the file services or server reboot will do.

To open DFS console GO to start > all programs > administrative tools > DFS management.

once you click on DFS management it launches DFS console.
